This superb ploidy-mutant sport of Hosta ‘Grand Tiara’ is our favorite of the “Tiara” group of hostas. With the same excellent vigor and compact growth habit of its parent, Hosta ‘Grand Prize’ boasts a very wide gold margin that quickly brightens to a creamy white. This dazzling clump is a “must” in all shade gardens. In midsummer, a 2′ wide Hosta ‘Grand Prize’ clump is topped with 2′ tall spikes of dark lavender flowers! Hosta ‘Grand Prize’ is what’s known as a 3.5-2-2 aneuploid chimera…it tried to become a tetraploid by doubling its chromosome number, but was stunted in development.
