Empress Wu

Empress Wu is the giant green hosta people still cross the nursery to find. Huge, dark green leaves with heavy substance build a dense, architectural mound that reads from across the garden—no variegation required. This is shrub-scale presence in the shade border: one clump, solid color, built to be the anchor.

The leaf substance is the real story. Thick foliage is why Empress Wu is listed slug resistant and sun tolerant on our bench. It holds up through heat better than a lot of oversized hostas when moisture stays steady, and it will take more sun than average—still at its best with afternoon shade.
